Today I have another dear friend and fellow tapping school alumni, Carolyn Clark, here to share all of her magic about being a highly sensitive person and how she uses tapping to help her clients regulate emotionally. If you have anxiety, perfectionism, procrastination, any of those things people pleasing, this is going to be a conversation you want to listen to.
00:02:43:17 - 00:03:16:04
Unknown
So Carolyn, I'm so grateful for you joining us today, sharing your story. I will start off with your story with tapping what brought you into this world in this work? Well, first of all, hi Jackie, happy New Year. Hi to everyone. It's a privilege to be here. Thank you so much. Well, my goodness, do you know that it's now been three years since since I went through your tapping training, and it's been a very rich three years.
00:03:16:04 - 00:04:06:09
Unknown
Jackie. Well, my story is related to, you know, my life and what has led me forward and ultimately to find and incorporate tapping into my world. I'm, a counselor. I'm, over decades. I am a highly sensitive person. I, you know, I have, out of my own upbringing, have come forward into life, with all the bounty of skills that led me very strongly into being, I help others and what I, what I have come to, you know, very easily recognize is, is that and which I support my clients.
00:04:06:09 - 00:04:45:06
Unknown
And it's a big piece is that I, you know, my childhood framework was such that I, I really, you know, like all of us, we typically tend to have those, you know, those points of our, our little childhood, lives that bring us forward with, with styles of, of coping, styles of being, etc.. Well, I really, really came forward in life as a really highly sensitive child and, I'm, I'm delighted to have ultimately found tapping.
00:04:45:06 - 00:05:19:17
Unknown
I wish that I had found tapping like, so much sooner in my life. It could have served to help me as that, young girl ballerina, you know, really, you know, just, you know, so, needing to be in alignment with, you know, perfectionism, etc.. Anyways, that the point that I found, tapping I had seen you've been on my radar for a while, and I was highly attracted to you.
00:05:19:17 - 00:05:57:09
Unknown
Have tea. Not only for myself, but with the curiosity to bring it into my into my counseling. I got a little taste of tapping, from another friend who is also a teacher, and I'm going to say maybe a year or two later, I just said yes to coming in and, going through your program. And it has not only served me immensely personally, but it's a very, very highly integrated and, successful healing modality for my clients, my workshop attendees.
00:05:57:14 - 00:06:16:12
Unknown
I'm so glad to have it in my tool belt, personally and professionally. Really, it's made a remarkable difference. I love that you brought it. Not only it helped you, but you're bringing it to others every day in your own way. Like you said, it can blend into your workshops. It can blend into your one on ones.
00:06:16:14 - 00:06:38:17
Unknown
I'm curious if people are listening and they're like, how do I know if I'm a highly sensitive person? Do you have any, you know, tips or like, how do people know if they're highly sensitive? What are some signs? Well, my goodness, you know, those of us that are highly sensitive, I'm gonna speculate, know that we're highly sensitive.
00:06:38:19 - 00:07:41:16
Unknown
We may have even been somewhat labeled as as little children, you know that. Oh my goodness. Don't take things so personally or don't be so sensitive. But we're, we're sensors. We, we're readers, we pick up energy use. We might be even, empathic, you know, us sensitives might be, ultra kind of, prone to even sensory sensitivities, you know, like overwhelming stimulation out in the world, visually or auditory, you know, perhaps smells can be just, like, overwhelming, so sensory, you know, typically sensory and helpful because I think about I, I didn't know I was a highly sensitive person until I just thought there's, like, introverts and extroverts until I
00:07:41:16 - 00:08:04:09
Unknown
realized, like, no, I mean, it is being introverted, extroverted. It's just I get I highly overstimulated in certain settings, like being in a big room. I remember speaking at events and lots of women. I'd be like, why do I feel so anxious? Like, because there's so much energy and like you said, you're feeling it. You're picking up, you're sensing a lot at once, and it can feel like, whoa, really, really strong, like
00:08:04:09 - 00:08:23:14
Unknown
Hey, this is just a brief pause in the episode to remind you to join us for the learn to tab free training. It is coming up this December if you're listening to it live, or you can watch the replay at any time, and it is a four day free experience to teach you more about the science of tapping.
00:08:23:16 - 00:08:52:16
Unknown
We're going to talk about my released receive method, how to use tapping to heal past memories, how to use tapping to heal your body, and most importantly, how to use tapping to manifest your wildly wealthy life. We're going to be tapping on things like visibility, like healing your body, like, embodying your wildly wealthy woman identity. And then on the last day, we're going to talk about the business of tapping how you can incorporate tapping into your current practice or build a business using this incredible life changing technique.
00:08:52:17 - 00:09:05:20
Unknown
So make sure you go join us, check out the show notes. It is all free and we can't wait to see you there! This is going to be a life changing event. As we always say, tapping buttons you and you're ready for it. We'll see you this December.
00:09:05:20 - 00:09:08:14
Unknown
overwhelming at times.
00:09:08:16 - 00:09:50:09
Unknown
Yeah. Or, you know, there are some that just really have a perpetually busy brain, like, just almost like there's a hamster on a wheel going on, which is you and that, you know, that busy brain has a way of just flooding the system, as we know, combined with all of that, external kind of stimulation as well. And don't we know that the world is really just accelerated in, in ways that, you know, those of us that are built, you know, in a more sensitive way can be very susceptible to getting toppled by all of that input.
00:09:50:11 - 00:10:17:11
Unknown
And so how important it is, therefore, to have ways in which to, to regulate ourselves and, and that's where like little things, I remember when I started learning about highly sensitive like little things, like maybe flying on a plane, maybe that's not little, but, you know, like, other people could do it so easily, but I would get, like, overwhelmed or feel really intense, like the security, like freaked me out or, you know, things that make other people can do that.
00:10:17:11 - 00:10:37:17
Unknown
Why can't I? But if you're highly sensitive, it's just you're experiencing life in a much richer way a lot of times, like, you can feel things so deeply, but as you said, it can be really overwhelm. So this is really helpful for people to know, signs, symptoms that you're highly sensitive. And what are some of the common things you tap with people?
00:10:37:17 - 00:11:29:11
Unknown
I work with people on that are highly sensitive. My goodness. Well, gee, you know, I would say it's it's really fair to say that every client that I work with, the starting point is really to support that person to, to become more regulated. There's absolutely no point in, in, starting with a client looking at their essential goals for their personal growth or, you know, goals that they want to achieve in their lives, without first are really looking at how well is this person supported, you know, are they living in or are they able to kind of exist in kind of a healthy balance and a place in the counseling world?
00:11:29:11 - 00:12:16:06
Unknown
We use a model called the Window of Tolerance. And, you know, it's a it's a it's a healthy zone, where we can be acquainted with our emotions. We're in a space of clear thinking. We therefore have the capacity, for taking right action. But if you know, if, as a highly sensitive or those that are inclined, like I have been in my early life towards perfectionism, which really is just a coping mechanism, I or I mean, there's all sorts of other coping mechanisms, styles that we that we naturally develops little children just to kind of get through, you know, what we need to get through, whether they're big energies going on
00:12:16:06 - 00:12:58:08
Unknown
around us or maybe missing, you know, energies that are, in a mission, as was kind of the case for me as a little girl. And, yeah. So, you know, with her. Yeah. Just those tendencies towards perfectionism or people pleasing, you know, looking outside of ourselves to get that, you know, that reading on, oh, where do I fit in am I loved, you know, do I belong and, and how it plays on our, on our entire ability to, to just be in either resourced in our or our skills or not.
00:12:58:08 - 00:13:26:22
Unknown
So that's really all. And I'll just go, you know, that using that window of my window of, tolerance rather more at all. You know how easy it is as a highly sensitive person to, you know, with the overstimulation, we can either shatter nervous systems, spurt, and, take us out of that healthy range into what's, like a hyper hyper, you know?
00:13:27:00 - 00:13:57:03
Unknown
Yeah. Dysregulation. Sunny, we're anxious. We might be actually panicky or get angry or, you know, we're just kind of everything is escalated, elevated to high. And so we lose our capacity to just be in our in our our ability to moderate. Some people go in a downward, hypo. It's like they go numb or they shut down.
00:13:57:03 - 00:14:32:15
Unknown
They lose their capacity to think and woof or they just numb. They just in a sense go to sleep and and they lose their capacity to be in a resource from that way. So, so how important it is, and especially in this big crazy world right now, whether we're highly sensitive, perfectionists, people pleasers or not, how important it is to just offer ourselves some good tools to be as regulated as we possibly can.
00:14:32:15 - 00:14:59:04
Unknown
So that's where I start with every client to help them ground come home to themselves, in a sense. And tapping is like, right in that all important, you know, evidence based healing modality toolkit. Yes. It's such a good, how you explain that. So it's called the what did you call it, the level of tolerance, the window of tolerance and tolerance.
00:14:59:06 - 00:15:14:22
Unknown
So how you explain that, like people can be up or people can be down. So anyone listening like where are you at in your level of tolerance today? Do you feel like you're like in the middle, you're feeling regulated because that that's what I'm hearing when you're in this, when you have tolerance, that's a regulated state. Is that correct?
00:15:14:22 - 00:15:49:20
Unknown
Like if it is and it's not static, I'll call that the green Zone. It's it's sort of it is a place where we can naturally kind of flow with the comings and goings of life. We have a steady flow in our in our emotional body. You know, we can have emotions that can come and go and flow through, we're not, in a grip mode and, you know, spiking or losing ourselves, and, and getting to hold.
00:15:49:22 - 00:16:11:00
Unknown
Yeah, we can be in our clear thinking and, and so that's really helpful information. Just a check in for everyone. Like where am I today in that wind of tolerance? Am I feeling like I'm in it? I'm able to move through life, have things happen and, you know, get through it? Or am I feeling super hyper vigilant, over stimulated overreacting?
00:16:11:00 - 00:16:32:13
Unknown
Or am I below and just numb? Disconnected? And it's interesting, as you explain, that I could think of either times in my life when I felt one or the other or people and like, oh, there's certain people that come to mind that I know are in that state, and that's a sign of dysregulation. And so you can help those people through tapping things like tapping to come back into that zone.
00:16:32:13 - 00:16:57:10
Unknown
So what what do you notice are some of the things that bump people out of that zone of tolerance? Is there any anything in particular? Is there events that happen or would get some of that that zone? Well, I would say, that a really big piece that I check in with my clients on is how is their self-care?
00:16:57:12 - 00:17:27:13
Unknown
And, you know, how are they taking care of themselves? Have they got a framework of, of really good practices where they can actually support themselves and holistically, you know, physically, what sort of things how are you looking after yourself in your your nutrition, your movement? How is your sleep? You know, g where's your your mental emotional, body?
00:17:27:13 - 00:17:56:12
Unknown
How are you doing in all of these ways? How is your connection with, with loved ones or friends? What sort of supports system have you got? And oftentimes those are, you know, places where even, you know, perhaps individuals have gotten off track, they've gotten busy with work or family. They aren't prioritizing themselves. And and so that's a good, you know, that's a good starting place.
00:17:56:14 - 00:18:31:05
Unknown
Certainly. My goodness. Don't we know there are life circumstance comes and hits us hard. You know, sometimes it's it's the loss of a loved one. And we're suddenly grieving and or, you know, our relationships are in trouble and, you know, having to maneuver, you know, G knowing how to come through, you know, whether it, it results in, you know, working on the relationship or ending the relationship or wholly.
00:18:31:05 - 00:18:55:15
Unknown
There's no shortage of of, ways. Really? Yeah. I just like to go through it because people can recognize, like, you know, if I did have something big happen recently or if I have been neglecting taking care of my body, like those can all impact your emotional regulation. I love how you teach this. And I love your presence because just being in your energy, people, I swear I can't be regulated.
00:18:55:15 - 00:19:23:06
Unknown
You're so beautiful. Thank you for, so for anybody listening that is struggling with, you know, finding that emotional regulation, that balance is there any other tips you would have for them today? Anything you would recommend that they do? Oh my goodness. Wow. Lots. And how to bring it forth in in a few minutes here I did make myself a few little notes.
00:19:23:06 - 00:20:15:07
Unknown
So as you see me look down, let me just refer. Oh, goodness. Well, g so one of the things I did make a few points and, to come to this, this invitation, Jackie and, you know, one of the things that I that I know that is really, a message of kind of hope and healing is that, first of all, you know, we all, every single one of us were a child back then, and we had our unique variation of of influences, factors both good and, you know, a challenging or or maybe missing and, you know, it's it's worthy of kind of taking stock of what has made me, me,
00:20:15:09 - 00:20:42:11
Unknown
what has made me, me and, to to take a dip back, that's, that's often the first part of the journey with my private clients is, Hey, you are who you are now, and you're informed by a whole lot of your past. Let's take a look there. And let's let's pour a little love on, what brought you here?
00:20:42:13 - 00:21:14:18
Unknown
And, you know, for those of us that can be, possibly really hard on ourselves and maybe judge ourselves or hold parts of ourselves separate, I'm going to just invite that. Actually, it's to pour some love on and actually bring some of those, those old energies, you know, in and help them come forward into, healing and, and integration and, you know, supporting, letting go of some old ways.
00:21:14:20 - 00:21:38:19
Unknown
I love out of one of my recent trainings, there was a beautiful, introduction of using seeds. So those of us from Seed World, you know, it's it's like, gee, we got we got, you know, some old stuff from our past. Let's take a look in there. What are those old patterns of thinking and feeling that might be keeping us stuck?
00:21:38:21 - 00:22:06:16
Unknown
And where did I leave my self behind? How is that little girl in me doing? Oh, and how can I actually pour some love on her and, help, help heal some of those old ways? You know, g through all sorts of different practices, you know, whether it be through, journal writing, reflective, writing, super powerful.
00:22:06:17 - 00:22:53:05
Unknown
You know, maybe it's some, emotive work. Maybe it's some release work you're all about, you know, releasing in order to receive, you know, it's, it's it's bringing parts of self, in to become a more integrative whole person in the now more present it it's, and to acquaint to with a stronger sense of self as an adult now so that I can go out, with that inner child in me loved and and and put some healing on her or him and, and.
00:22:53:06 - 00:23:14:21
Unknown
Yeah. Integrated. Yeah. That is, is exactly what we teach in advance CFT. Right. And from a tapping perspective and, the thing that I, I can probably sense that people think of like, I don't want to look at my past, but that's where tapping is such a powerful tool that can help bring down the resistance or fear, or the perception that it has to be an unpleasant experience.
00:23:14:23 - 00:23:31:16
Unknown
It is actually like in tapping school, we talk about how the past unlocks a future. It is a key to ultimate freedom. And to me, limitlessness like, if you have big things you want to do, your your parts in your past self are the key to helping you get there. So I love that you're doing this work with people.
00:23:31:16 - 00:24:07:07
Unknown
Carolyn. It is so powerful, too powerful to integrate it, like you said, with other practices to whether that's journaling or like you said, like in the body, like moving me. And do you have yourself so many different. Well, and I love Jackie that you, you make mention of, you know, there is sometimes an imagination of like for some that, oh my goodness, if I ever look back in my past, you know, like, oh, that's going to open a, oh, you know, a Pandora's box of, of angst or pain or something.
00:24:07:09 - 00:24:55:05
Unknown
And seldom is that, I mean, for sure there are some that have had those big traumas. And, you know, that require perhaps some additional support. But, you know, most of us have have managed we've arrived at this point in our lives, like, super how on earth did we get here? But we did. And because we're resourceful and resilient and, you know, and there are ways and safe ways, even on our own and or in the context of a workshop support or a circle or or with a trusted mentor, you know, to be able to, you know, revisit parts of ourselves in psychological safety.
00:24:55:07 - 00:25:55:08
Unknown
And oftentimes they're not burdened with quite the, you know, the overload that we that we fear, that we imagine and and in instead or as well, we often can reacquaint with, you know, parts of ourselves that we put away that are lighter, that are freer, that are playful, that we can move some of this energy from the past through dance and, and maybe chaotic movement with fun factor and, and to integrate, into a whole different state of being much more companion to with, a broader sense of self and our, our capacity for, you know, being connected with others, being in relationship, being in relationship with ourself.
00:25:55:09 - 00:26:20:12
Unknown
That's where it really starts, you know, so beautiful. So if anyone is listening and they're like, this is intriguing me, I'm a highly sensitive person. I've never really learned about parts of self work or healing the past or how that all works. Carolyn, where can they connect with you or can I reach out to you? Is there a space online that you like to hang out?
00:26:20:14 - 00:26:53:17
Unknown
Well, Jackie, I, I have found my website, Carolyn Clark okay, I live on Vancouver Island and I'm just delighted that, this year, after three years of working entirely on online, I am, I'm part of a beautiful team of other healing practitioners at the Island Integrative Health Clinic in Nanaimo, working in person. It's so great. And bringing workshops, workshops online as well.
00:26:53:17 - 00:27:18:20
Unknown
So, through my website and yeah, I that's probably the the easiest place to find me amazing. And I know that you are putting together a tapping video for people. Can you share a little bit about that to free downloads after you've watched this you can go and download it. Yeah. Well that video will be about what will that help them do?
00:27:18:21 - 00:27:58:05
Unknown
Well, I really, love to support those that are really and, kind of accelerated energy. So my tapping video is really all about, bringing, beautiful sense of emotional regulation, you know, just coming home into self, feeling equipped with, a more grounded sense of self. I'll surely give, talk to, you know, any tendencies towards, perfectionism or, you know, people pleasing those other coping styles that we.
00:27:58:11 - 00:28:40:09
Unknown
So sadly, if that's a word, created when we were little and, and how to come forward into a just a clear, strong sense of self and really armed with that beautiful capacity to be present in that. And, in, in a healthy kind of realm of window of tolerance to come back to that. And it just shows up in every way as we as we are at home in our ourselves, we go out into the world much more, much more ourselves and able to give and share and be and be less, spanked or sparked by all of those intensities.
00:28:40:09 - 00:29:02:15
Unknown
We can ebb and flow with the world and, and, you know, and then come back into ourselves and use our tools when life triggers us all over again. Because isn't that the way it is? You know, everyone can use this resource and know what's going on in your life. Everyone can use a little extra regulation, a little extra self love.
00:29:02:17 - 00:29:26:18
Unknown
So make me go download that. It'll be underneath the video. Or if you're listening audibly underneath this conversation, we will link it up. Thank you so much Carolyn, for your time today or by the night. But, I'm so appreciative. Jackie, I love you. I'm so grateful to have found tapping and and not only yeah, I'm quite a different person.
00:29:26:18 - 00:29:57:15
Unknown
Having integrated tapping, I can say I feel a calm, and, support inside myself, that I didn't feel for the longest time in my earlier life. And it's, it's so simple, but so powerful. Don't we know? Hey. And bring it to, all of my work? It's really added an extra component that is so valuable to my my counseling and coaching, my workshops, taking it out into other circles.
00:29:57:15 - 00:30:18:07
Unknown
It's so, so beautiful when you're such a phenomenal practitioner. It's an honor to have you in this community. Carolyn, we love you. I love you, everyone listening. Thank you. So follow Carolyn Carolyn Clark okay. Download this for free resource she has and we'll see you all next time.
